If you are looking for a great neighborhood bar in the heart of South Philly, check out Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar. This bar has been family operated since 1938 when it was opened by the late Ray Capozzoli. Now Ray’s son, Lou, runs the place with the same tradition and ambience as did his father. Ray welcomed everyone into the bar by wishing them a “Happy Birthday.“ The ambience is still welcoming, if not nostalgic. A blue-tiled trough runs along the bottom of the bar and photos decorate the walls. Everyone is welcome at Ray’s, from Old South Philly men to young hipsters. Its located a block away from the Italian market. There is no kitchen at the bar, so Ray’s doesn’t mind if you bring your own sandwich and wash it down with a beer. There’s live music on Saturday nights and don’t miss the karaoke on Friday nights.
