If you look up “dive bar” in the dictionary, don’t be surprised if you see a picture of McGlinchey’s Bar & Grill. This dark, smoky, (yeah that’s right smoky -because McGlinchey’s was one of the first bars to apply for a variance from the Philadelphia-wide smoking ban),Center City bar is known for it’s cheap beer, 75 cent hot dogs and surly staff. You don’t need to dress to impress here. Just come as you are and set yourself up at the bar. It seats about 40. The diverse crowd of beer drinkers is made up of old and young alike. Most are here for the good, affordable beer and the great juke box. They are not here for the live music (there is none) or the large screen TV (there isn’t one of these, either). If the wait at the Ms. Pac man table gets too long and you can’t wait to get a drink, you can always head upstairs. There’s another bar upstairs and the same rules apply. Don’t go to McGlinchey’s if you want service with a smile or snooty alcoholic drinks. But if you like some great bar atmosphere and cheap beer, McGlinchey’s is your place.
